Here’s what we learned … B. Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke (12) tackles Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Jackson Jeffcoat after throwing an interception during the first half of CFL football game in Vancouver, on Saturday, July 9, 2022. Photo by DARRYL DYCK /THE CANADIAN PRESS DEM’S FIGHTIN’ WORDS One expects young players to make mistakes. It’s another to see the veterans do it. DB Marcus Sayles gave the Bombers plenty of locker-room fodder a day out from the game, with some ill-advised words: “Right now they look like they’re a little vanilla, ” he told the Winnipeg Sun. “They’ve been skating away by little points, so we feel like we can beat them pretty bad.
He didn’t have any rushing yards on the day. Rourke’s CFL record accuracy run — no player in CFL history has been more accurate over a three-game span (83. 8 per cent) — came to an end against a cagey Bombers defence that sacked him once, picked him off twice, and was in his face all night long. Michael O’Connor also threw an interception in late-game relief for Rourke. Collaros, owner of the season’s longest consecutive completion streak with 14 in a row vs. Toronto, picked apart the Lions underbelly and on corner routes. Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Willie Jefferson (5) blocks a pass attempt by B.

Photo by DARRYL DYCK /THE CANADIAN PRESS STAYING ALIVE Jenarion Grant returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, and B. was down 7-0 before the game was 30 seconds old. He looked like he’d put the game to bed with 2:38 left in the first half, when he weaved 90 yards through the Lions coverage to score yet again. But a holding call pushed Winnipeg back, and the Bombers had a 35-yard play wiped out by another penalty, forcing them 2-and-out. A few plays later, Rourke hit Rhymes on a 35-yard bomb to pull the Lions within two scores, with an entire half left to play. “We didn’t have guys pointing fingers or going in the tank. That’s what I like about this team, ” said Rourke.

I mean, they made more plays than us today, ” he said. “They gotta line it up next time. That’s all that matters. And I love how my guys responded. We’re not beating each other up during the adversity, we’re hugging each other during adversity, and letting each other know we’re gonna ride for each other.

ROLE REVERSAL The Bombers came into the game averaging 3. 9 yards per carry, lowest in the league. But Johnny Augustine and Brady Oliveira came to play, consistently setting up the Bombers in second and short, with both averaging 6. 0 yards per carry in the first half. They had 141 on the day, with Augustine (12/57) and Oliveira (7/39) doing the bulk of the work. The Lions, who led the league in rushing and yards per carry coming in, had just 33 rushing yards. James Butler found little traction in the few carries he had (8/33), and Rourke rarely looked to put his head down and run — or had little time to.
“(We were a) chocolate sundae, ” said Bombers defensive lineman Willie Jefferson. “We had some sprinkles on there. A little whipped cream, a cherry on the top. It just wasn’t vanilla, I can tell you that. ” This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The Lions fell to 3-1, failing to measure up in their first test against top tier competition, having beaten three teams with a combined record of 2-10 coming in. “We’ve got to play better to beat those guys. They’re good, ” said Lions coach Rick Campbell. “They’re a good football team; we want to be like these guys. The guys won the Grey Cup back to back and they’re undefeated.

“You learn a lot more about people when there is adversity and you lose. It’s easy to win and have people pat you on the back. You learn a lot more when you do have a setback. They’re obviously very disappointed. I’m disappointed. I hate losing. But at the same time, I know they see the big picture and we got a lot of important football ahead of us. ” Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ Greg McCrae, centre, carries the ball for a first down past B.

“This is a great humbling and it’s a great learning opportunity for the next time we play them — or anybody else for that matter. We’re a solution-based defence and team. We’re going to fix our mistakes and come back better. We can’t hang our heads on anything. We played hard. They just played better. They out-schemed us. But we’ll be back. ” I did question the wisdom of calling the two-time defending champs offence "vanilla. " It is the world's most popular ice cream flavour, after all. #BCLions— J.

And the comments of being a “vanilla” team definitely fired them up, with Janarion Grant serving up the first scoop by returning the opening kickoff 97-yards for a touchdown.

Lucky Whitehead, slowed by a nagging ankle injury picked up against Toronto, was blanketed by the Bombers D and only had two catches on four targets for 14 yards.

It hurts to lose but … onward we’ll go. ” Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke was picked off on his first series, but did engineer three touchdown drives against the league’s most stingy defence.
